Poem for Graeme Walker by Florence Stopps

Poem for Graeme

Among the thoughtful phone calls we have received for Graeme, one touching conversation was from a woman who knew Graeme as a young man.

She has thoughtfully written a poem for Graeme and given us permission to share it for his, friends and all to enjoy.

I have also included a couple of her other poems, that were relevant to the times we are in.

G R A E M E W A L K E R

(22.9.1938 – 23.4.2022.)
He always had a happy smile,
His greetings were always sincere.
His enquiries for your welfare,
Were heartfelt and would endear.
He loved my published contributions
Whether letters, stories or rhymes.
He chuckled when they were controversial,
Saying, “You get even better with time.”
No matter the time that had passed
Between our casual encounters would be,
His friendly interest in my life,
Always meant so much to me.
We first met at Southgate Plaza

In Graeme’s Father’s shop half a century ago.
I too was a Real Estate Consultant,
So for Graeme I was helpful to know.
I’m glad we met by chance in October
At Noarlunga Bunnings Hardware store.
I shared many of my inspirational poems,
And hope they helped when he needed them more.

Farewell dear friend and colleague,
I’ll miss your brilliant smile and cheeky grin.
But most of all I’ll miss your kindness
And lessons to share happiness from within.

P O S T C O V I D – 19 – H U G S

I have a hug that’s big and warm
Just waiting for a home.
The person it is looking for
May be sad and feel alone.

Hugs will make you feel better
No matter who you are.
They will always come to you for free
And can travel near or far.

So if you ever need a hug,
Learn to always give one away.
When we are free, just offer one:
You could make somebody’s day.

FORK IN THE ROAD
Sometimes in life misfortune
Will strike us suddenly.
Our life may change a little,
Or drastically and permanently.

We may question why it happened –
Could it have been foreseen?
By acceptance and keeping spirits high
A different life we may convene.

As you travel this unfamiliar road
Remember you are not alone,
For many are thinking of you,
And the bravery you have shown.

If we can look out to the world
Accept help and love and care.
Not waste strength on blame and anger,
We’ll build courage and not despair.

If we can seek out others
Who have travelled a similar way,
To find some inspiration
And support them if they go astray.

They will help you keep your humour
And stay close by when you need.
We never know how strong we are –
We don’t fail, if we try to succeed.

Sometimes we may lose an ability
To perform a specific task,
But with perseverance, nature gives –
Another skill – if we try and we ask.
