How often do you actually read the warnings on packaging? Apart from whether something is suitable for the microwave or not, I can’t say that I read them too often.
Apparently, there is a warning on the bag of potting mix, warning users to wear a mask, gloves and wash hands after use. Well, unfortunately for one of our sales representatives, this warning sign went unnoticed and they contracted pneumonia.
Upon asking the doctor how this could have happened, the doctor suggested potting mix. Our sales rep instantly recalled using potting mix a few days prior without any worries of wearing protective gear.
“I have been gardening and using potting mix for years” our agent explained, “I have never worn a mask and have always been fine”. We have so many clients who love taking care of their gardens, so we felt it was necessary to warn people of the dangers.
After a quick Google search, you will discover the dangers of potting mix are very real and many search results suggest to take the following safety precautions:
- Wear a mask
- Wear gloves
- Wash hands thoroughly after use
- Be careful to not cross-contaminate
- Try not to breath in particles (including when you are watering)
- Do not lean over bag as you’re opening it.

We are pleased to report that the sales representative has made a full recovery but not after spending a week in hospital. So, please let this be a warning to you all and take extra care when using potting mix.
