About 10 years ago one of our Property Managers was doing a routine inspection. While inspecting the bedroom the tenant followed the Property Manager and was talking to her. The Property Manager felt that the tenant was acting strange; as if she was trying to hide something from her.
She continued talking to the tenant when she thought she saw, in the corner of her eye, the cupboard door move. Looking over she saw nothing and continued talking. Then it happened again. She saw the cupboard door move. She wondered who was in the cupboard.
As she walked over, she saw what it was. A paw popped out swiping the air in an attempt to open the door. Cats were not allowed at this property, and don’t particularly like being hidden in cupboards.
Although this is a rare and surprising occurrence; unfortunately it is not the first or last time a tenant has tried to hide a pet in the cupboard. We had a tenant hide a dog in the linen cupboard, which was discovered after the Property Manager heard it scratching the inside of the door and another tenant hid a cat in the pantry.
Pets don’t love being hidden away in cupboards, so best practice is to just ask for permission BEFORE you get a pet.
