About 6 months ago we posted an article called ‘Have you got insurance?‘. This article discussed the importance of insurance for both tenants and landlords, as well as specific types of landlords insurance.
We find that most landlords have some sort of insurance in place but not all tenants do. It is a common misconception that tenants belongings are covered under the landlords insurance. Unfortunately, many people find out the hard way that this is not the case.
If you are renting a property that gets damaged and results in your personal belongings also being damaged, it is up to you as the tenant to ensure that your belongings are insured, you can’t reply on the owners building insurance to cover your contents.
Insurance is one of those bills where so many of us think ‘that can wait’. The fact is you never know when you are going to need it and just because the house is not on fire right now, doesn’t mean you should post-pone getting insurance. Yes, in the pile of bills, it gets expensive but ask anyone who has lost all of their belongs and they will tell you that it is worth it.
Of course, that brings me to the next point, make sure you read and understand your policy. Ask questions and if you don’t have time then you can always hire an insurance broker.
