While population figures might show a steady migration to the north, the most popular places to buy a house or unit are definitely in the southern states, according to real estate website, realestate.com.au.
Pakenham, about 53km southeast from the Melbourne CBD is the most popular place to buy a house in Australia with a massive 806 changing hands in the past 12 months.
Close behind was Port Macquarie in New South Wales where 792 houses sold during the same period.
The highest number of house sales in South Australia was in Morphett Vale where 437 houses changed hands. The median house price in the suburb is currently an affordable $282,000. The highest priced home listed for sale in the suburb on realestate.com.au on Monday March 3, was $410,000.
In all there were 23 suburbs throughout the country which had more than 500 house sales.
The majority of the top selling suburbs had low median house prices and were at least 12km from the CBD.
Ten suburbs in Australia achieved more than 500 unit sales with the majority of those in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria.
Hobart was the smallest market with its best performer Sandy Bay where 93 units sold.
