In a huge win for South Australia, the City of Onkaparinga and Colonnades Shopping Centre will host the first Jamie Oliver Ministry of Food Pop Up Kitchen in Australia.

Jamie Oliver flew to Australia to make the announcement at a special event in Sydney yesterday.

The Ministry of Food received 170 applications from all over Australia, with the joint bid submitted by the City of Onkaparinga and Colonnades chosen by Jamie over seven other finalists – one from each state.

Mayor Rosenberg said Jamie’s Pop Up Kitchen would be a focal point for food education in the region.

“This has so much potential to improve the health and eating habits of many people in our community, and encourage more locals to cook with the fantastic produce grown right here in
our backyard,” Mayor Rosenberg said.

City of Onkaparinga Chief Executive Officer Mark Dowd said the win was an amazing moment for everyone involved in the bid.

“Thousands of people supported our bid which will bring significant benefits to our communities and businesses. I’m extremely proud of the application and campaign we put forward and what has been achieved through this collaboration,” Mark said.

The Pop Up kitchen will be located in Colonnades Shopping Centre and will open onto Ramsay Place, a green community space that will allow for alfresco dining and space for a herb and vegetable garden. Federation Centres, the owners of Colonnades, will fit out the space with a commercial standard kitchen suitable for cooking lessons and demonstrations.

Community groups, schools and businesses will also be encouraged to use the space for special food related events and education sessions.

Colonnades Marketing Manager Kate Stevenson said “The location is ideal not only for Onkaparinga residents but for anyone in Adelaide who can simply catch a train to Noarlunga Centre then walk just a short distance to the Pop Up kitchen.”

“Together with the City of Onkaparinga we will work heavily promote the Pop Up kitchen and we welcome anyone to visit, improve their knowledge and skills and start preparing great food
at home for their families and friends.”

The City of Onkaparinga and Colonnades Shopping Centre wish to thank the businesses and community groups that provided letters of support and the thousands of people who signed the petition, liked and shared Facebook posts and the YouTube video, and provided letters of support.
